The Office of the Ombudsman is seeking two dedicated warranted lawyers to join our team on full time basis as Investigating Officers. This role offers a unique opportunity to contribute to fairness and justice by conducting impartial investigations into complaints regarding maladministration and omissions of the public service and/or the public administration. The role will also include the promotion and protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms of the person.

As an Investigating Officer, you will be mainly responsible for handling assigned cases, carrying out thorough investigations, and liaising with public officials and complainants to resolve grievances efficiently. You will report directly to the Head of Investigations and the Ombudsman while ensuring that all casework meets the highest standards of quality, accuracy, and timeliness.

Your main responsibilities will include conducting investigations into complaints, planning and managing caseloads effectively, carrying out onsite visits and interviews, and gathering relevant evidence. You will also be required to prepare investigation reports, case notes, and correspondence in Maltese or English, assist Senior Investigating Officers and the Head of Investigations in handling complex cases, maintain accurate records using the Case Management System, and participate in research, outreach activities, and professional development initiatives.

Applicants must possess a LL.D Degree or a Master of Advocacy and two years post-warrant experience.  They must demonstrate strong analytical, investigative, and legal research skills. Excellent communication skills in Maltese and English, both written and spoken, are essential. The ideal candidates should have the ability to work independently and as part of a team while maintaining a commitment to integrity, fairness, and impartiality.

This role is designed for career progression. Successful candidates are expected to advance to Senior Investigating Officer within two years, subject to performance and experience gained within the Office.
