The Commissioner for Education, Chief Justice Emeritus Vincent De Gaetano, has returned from Ireland where on Saturday 9th November he participated in the inaugural Lismullin Legal Gathering, an event which brought together law students, lawyers and academics from across the island of Ireland at the historic Lismullin Conference Centre in Co. Meath, Republic of Ireland.
The Commissioner was one of the invited speakers at the gathering, along with the Rt. Hon. Lord Justice McCloskey (Lord Justice of Appeal of Northern Ireland and a Privy Councillor), Dr Marie-Luce Paris (Associate Professor in Law at University College Dublin – Sutherland School of Law), and Professor Christopher McCrudden (Professor of Human Rights and Equality Law at Queen’s University, Belfast).
The theme of the gathering was ‘Human Dignity and the Law’. The purpose of the gathering was to bring together people with a keen legal interest in the ‘big questions’ pertinent to contemporary legal discourse by offering an unparalleled opportunity to engage in high-level dialogue and to network with experts across jurisdictions. Chief Justice De Gaetano delivered a seminal presentation on ‘Dignity through the Jurisprudence of the ECtHR: My experience’.
The Commissioner was also invited to visit the offices of Millar McCall Wylie, a leading commercial and private law firm in the centre of Belfast, Northern Ireland, where he addressed trainee solicitors about the historical evolution of the European Court of Human Rights and its procedures since its inception, and the extraordinary work and cases that he encountered during his time as a judge elected in respect of Malta on the court in Strasbourg.
