The Parliamentary Ombudsman, Judge Emeritus Joseph Zammit McKeon, and the Commissioner for Health, Prof. Raymond Galea, addressed a group of 70 elderly residents as part of the Tarxien Local Council’s ‘Anzjanità Attiva’ initiative. The participation of the Office of the Ombudsman in this event followed an invitation from Mr. Mario Fava, President of the Local Councils Association, as part of his tireless efforts to foster direct engagement between the public and institutions.

In his address, the Ombudsman provided an overview of the role and functions of his Office, explaining how the Ombudsman’s services can directly assist elderly persons. He emphasised that such outreach initiatives are essential to raise awareness on the Office’s work, ensuring that the public is informed about their rights and how to seek redress in cases of maladministration.

The Commissioner for Health focused on health-related concerns, including where ageing is concerned, highlighting his role in investigating complaints related to public health services. He outlined common issues that elderly may encounter when accessing public healthcare and explained how his Office can intervene to address grievances and advocate for improvements in healthcare delivery.

The session was interactive, allowing attendees to pose questions and share concerns directly with the Ombudsman and the Commissioner for Health. This engagement reinforced the importance of ensuring that the Office of the Ombudsman remains close and accessible to the public.

Concluding the meeting, the Ombudsman expressed his appreciation to the Local Council Association, Tarxien Mayor Mr Joseph Abela, and the Tarxien Local Council for organising such initiatives.
