The International Ombudsman Institute (IOI), founded in 1978, is an international organization for cooperation of more than 150 offices of Ombudsmen. In addition to its periodic conferences, the IOI encourages the exchange of information on regional and international levels.

The main goal of the IOI was the facilitation of communication between all members, in order to be a real discussion forum open to the world and dedicated to mediation.

It is organized into six regions: Africa, Asia, Australasia & Pacific, Europe, Caribbean and Latin America and North America. The three working languages of the organization are English, French and Spanish. Each region serves as a regional constituency of the IOI to promote regional participation in the activities of the Institute and the decentralization of these activities.

In December 2023, the Parliamentary Ombudsman of Malta, Judge Emeritus Joseph Zammit McKeon, was elected as a Board Member of the International Ombudsman Institute (IOI) European Regional Board. Since the Parliamentary Ombudsman was one of the five members who received the most votes, he was elected on the IOI Board of Directors at a global level.
