Parliamentary Ombudsman receives courtesy visit from outgoing and incoming Rectors of the University of Malta

The Parliamentary Ombudsman, Judge Joseph Zammit McKeon, received a courtesy visit from the outgoing Rector of the University of Malta, Professor Alfred J. Vella, and the incoming Rector, Professor Frank Bezzina, who will assume office as the 82nd Rector of the University of Malta on 1 July 2026.

The meeting was also attended by the Commissioner for Education within the Office of the Ombudsman, Chief Justice Emeritus Vincent De Gaetano.

The meeting provided an opportunity to discuss matters of mutual interest concerning higher education, good governance, and the role of educational institutions in responding to the evolving needs of society.

Discussions focused on the longstanding relationship between the University of Malta and the Office of the Ombudsman, particularly in promoting the principles of fairness, accountability, and good administration within the tertiary education sector, particularly the University of Malta.

During the course of the meeting views were also exchanged on the rapidly changing educational landscape and the challenges and opportunities arising from technological developments, including artificial intelligence. The importance of ensuring that educational institutions continue to adapt to emerging realities while maintaining academic excellence and serving the needs of students and society was highlighted.

The meeting further addressed the role of higher education institutions in preparing graduates for an evolving labour market and the importance of maintaining strong links between education, research, public service, and the wider community.

The Parliamentary Ombudsman thanked Professor Alfred J. Vella for his contribution and service to the University of Malta during his tenure as Rector and congratulated Professor Frank Bezzina on his appointment, wishing him every success in his forthcoming term of office.
